Brody woke with a heavy heart. He sat up in bed and rotated his shoulders to ease some of the tightness. Gazing around the oversized master bedroom suite, he wondered why it felt like he’d slept inside a straight jacket. The moonlight illuminated the antique furniture he’d never bothered replacing after his adoptive parents had passed. The white shafts of light transformed each piece into menacing creatures of the night.

Though the first glow of sunrise was barely tickling the horizon, the barn swallows were already twittering on the Arizona rosewood bushes outside the windows. Their cheerful song slowly chased away the disturbing details of Brody’s dream — one rumbling with way too many camouflage painted trucks, broken fences, and hospital bills. Just the thought of hospital bills was enough to revive his old injuries and make his leg ache.

Digging his thumb into the muscles of his knee that his physical therapist had worked so hard to bring back to life, Brody eased out of bed and gingerly put his weight on it. The pain immediately disappeared.

Or it had never been there in the first place. Rocking experimentally back and forth from heel to toe, he shook his head to clear the final remnants of his dream. A glance at the clock on his nightstand told him he had about fifteen minutes to dress and get on the road if he didn’t want to risk making Star late to work.

No sooner had he toweled off from his shower and started to dress than his phone buzzed with an incoming call. Yanking on a pair of jeans, he moved across the room to retrieve his cell phone from its recharger on the nightstand.

He smiled at the name of the caller. “Hey, darling!”

“So there’s been a change of plans on my end,” she informed him in a soft voice still laced with sleepiness.

“Are you feeling okay?” he asked quickly, praying she hadn’t contracted an illness from all her hanging around the hospital the day before.

“Never felt better,” she assured in a more energetic voice. She paused to yawn. “That said, I decided to take the rest of the week off.”

“Okay. Wow!” He rubbed a hand over his face. “Must be nice.” He’d be lying if he didn’t admit he was a bit jealous. His work on the ranch never ended. The animals and crops had to be tended every single day, rain or shine. So did their guests at the B&B.

“It is nice,” Star returned cheerfully, “because it means I get to come help you.”

“Wait a sec! What are you talking about?” Holding his phone against his shoulder with his chin, he reached for a clean plaid shirt and started snapping it on. “You still have college classes and homework. You can’t just drop everything and…”

“Oh, but I can,” she taunted merrily. “I’ve been up a couple of hours already, making the arrangements. My boss said he’d approve the vacay days, so long as I found coverage for all my shifts. Which I did.
